Social Determinants of Health (SDOH)

Social determinants of health are the conditions of where someone is born, grows, travels around, lives, and ages. These are grouped into 5 domains: Economic stability, education, healthcare, neighborhood, and social/community life.

Differences in SDOH & Effects

People with safe housing, a stable job, plenty of healthy food, access to education and healthcare, and live in a community with less discrimination and violence are more likely to have better health outcomes than people that do not. People that live in communities with worse SDOH can be more likely to have chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, or have much higher healthcare costs that cannot be afforded.

Many local and national governments focus on making SDOH equal for all its residents. Some ways governments do this are by making policies such as affordable housing and minimum wage laws.
