Throughout history, people have always been exposed to illnesses. The entire idea of medicine has been to make up new solutions for combating and preventing diseases from spreading. As technology rapidly advances, many forms of integration have been created that improve the lives of regular people. There have been various methods of technology that, oftentimes, are the reason that people are able to survive illnesses, which include microchips and, more recently, AI.
One of the most common forms of technologized medicine is microchips. Some microchips are specifically designed to release insulin in controlled amounts at specific times for patients with diabetes. Diabetes is a disease where the liver cannot produce enough insulin to regulate high blood glucose levels. According to the National Library of Medicine, diabetes killed over 6.7 million adults globally in 2021.
As useful as this microchip may sound, this just scratches the surface of how innovative microchips can really be. The uncommon implantable biosensor microchip is a device that has the potential to save an infinite amount of lives. Some other microchips provide continuous glucose level monitoring, the administering of various drugs in correct doses, early disease detection, and even biomarkers for personalized health insights.
Beckman Institute is an establishment that is working on training an AI system that can accurately identify tumors and diseases. It shows proof, reasoning, and steps for classification, which prompts doctors to make additional corrections to the diagnosis. This system helps to solve the issue of disease misdiagnosis, which causes several million people around the world to be diagnosed with the wrong disease and take the wrong treatment options.
According to Healthline, over 12 million people in the U.S. get misdiagnosed annually, and around 40-80 thousand people die due to complications from misdiagnoses. This number has come down slightly due to the advancements in technology, but it could be reduced much further with the implementation of modernized healthcare.
To sum up, there have been many great inventions in medicine, solving some of the world’s hardest problems like diabetes treatments and disease misdiagnosis, and innovations like microchips and AI software all help in lowering the negative impact that these complications have on the world.
