The following information has been obtained through the U.S. Department of Labor.
The Families First Coronavirus Response Act was put into effect on December 31, 2020, as a response to the deadly outcomes of the worldwide pandemic. This law states that employees are allowed paid sick leave and medical leave if their reasons associate with COVID-19. This law can cover up to 2 weeks for sick leave, and up to 10 weeks for expanded family and medical leave. This has its restrictions, so here are the 3 types that are broken down:
- Sick leave if you are quarantined due to COVID-19: Two weeks with full pay
- Sick leave if you are caring for a child or other individual with COVID-19: Two weeks with 2/3 pay
- Medical leave if you are caring for a child whose school is closed due to COVID-19: 10 weeks with 2/3 pay
During the peak months of the pandemic, this law was extremely helpful for several people struggling to balance family care and employment, showcasing the severity of the situation we faced in 2020.
